Mike and I started collecting her pieces when we worked at Mainstreet Gallery in Chincoteague, Virginia a long time ago, and were lucky enough to receive some more from a gallery in Maine a few years back as a gift. Now that we have a shop, we love being able to introduce other people to Claire's work. Each piece is colorful and playful and feels great in your hands, making them a joy to look at and use. Every surface is considered. Her bowls look as beautiful from underneath as they do inside. The really large bowls filled with fruit are a beautiful centerpiece on a large table. Small bowls are great for cereal and ice cream. The tiny "relish" bowls are perfect little condiment dishes and fulfill a multiple of small dish needs.
These pieces are a great gift. The little ones are great for a special hostess gift. The larger make wonderful, unique wedding presents. Since each piece is hand made by Claire they are all different.
Claire calls it "Urban Folk Pottery" and "functional porcelain" that is microwave, dishwasher and oven safe, (but don’t put it in a preheated oven). They are hand-thrown, slip trailed, and fired to cone 6 and all Claire's glazes are lead-free and safe for food.
Claire studied pottery with Clary Illian in Iowa, and with Chiyoichi Shimizu in Japan. She received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and has been making Urban Folk Pottery in Brooklyn since 1989.
