This month our Final Friday show, Stitched, is a group show including embroidered work from Michelle Gabriel, Arynn Blazer, Carolyn Deininger, Kelly Frigard, and Stephanie Housley. Stephanie and Michelle are both Cincinnati natives now living in Brooklyn. Michelle studied fashion design at UC DAAP, and Stephanie studied at Rhode Island School of Design. When I met Stephanie Housley in NY she told me that attending the School for the Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati changed her life and opened her eyes up to the possibility of making a living through art. In NY Stephanie has been working in textile design, concentrating on woven fabrics. She spends several months of the year in India designing textile collections. This month we are introducing her own, charming, machine embroidered designs she created for her business "Coral & Tusk".

The very talented Michelle Gabriel used to work with us at MiCA while she was a student at the University of Cincinnati. She has had hand embroidered artwork in the store before; (you may remember her "Robots In Love" series). This month Michelle has taken time from her consulting, teaching, and clothing design business to stitch-up some new pieces for us.

Arynn Blazer is a Cincinnati resident and studied Art History and Art Education at UC DAAP. This Friday we are showing off a few of her gorgeous, colorful, hand embroidered pieces.

Kelly Frigard is a textile artist and teacher here in Cincinnati and has two pieces from her "Lamb, Rabbit, Angel" series of hand felted & embroidered work in this month's show.

Carolyn Deininger, (that's me), is one of the owners of MiCA 12/v. For this show I have two pieces that were an experiment with using stitching as a method of mark-making on my original photographs, combining the craft of the gelatin silver printing process of photography with sewing. The show will hang from Sept. 30th to October 26th.

As always, on Final Friday we will have wine and treats on hand from 5 to 9 p.m. Be sure to check out all of the art shows in the shops, studios & galleries in Over-the-Rhine.

First days of spring are here and spring break is on the way. I look forward to a few days at home with my little girl and she looks even farther forward to an Easter basket with marshmallow bunnies. We both look forward to warm spring days and the rebirth of nature. Through Madelyn's eyes, (she's still a little closer to the ground than me), spring's transformation of our world is plainer, more apparent. Bulbs & bugs, sprouts and new shoots that I wouldn't normally notice are at the end of her pointing fingers.

With this in mind MiCA is proud to present "Lamb, Rabbit, Angel", mixed media work by Cincinnati artist, (and mother of two), Kelly Frigard. Of the work Kelly says; "I use white as the foundational color to reflect the theme of childhood, toys, animals, the imagination, the world of play, and the fragility of life. The work includes embroidered textiles, stuffed and ceramic animals, sculptural wings and dresses using felted wool and found fabrics." Kelly uses contrasts in scale between objects to represent the "sometimes daunting challenges children face in trying to mediate their world" and "power and powerlessness". Tender figures from the tender medium of fiber speak to us "of the dreamy, sweet, vulnerable & sometimes odd world of childhood".
Kelly's work will be on display from the 25th of March through Easter, April 24th.
